FLU FAQ'S

Nymark Medical Centre administer shots to both our rostered and walk-in patients. It’s recommended that everyone 6 months and older get the flu shot. It’s your best defence against the flu and helps to prevent you from getting very sick, while also protecting others close to you by reducing the spread.

WHAT IS THE FLU?

Influenza (flu) is a common respiratory illness that can range from a mild case to one requiring hospitalization.

Flu symptoms generally appear 1 to 4 days after exposure to the virus and usually include the sudden appearance of:

  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose

Other common symptoms may include:

You may also have
(especially children):

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting

What to do if you have the flu

STAY HOME!

Avoid close contact with other people as the virus can be contagious starting 1 day before symptoms appear until approximately 5 days after first symptoms.

REST
HYDRATE

Drink lots of fluids, like water

TAKE MEDICATION

if needed, to reduce any fever or aches

Flu or COVID-19?

Some of the symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to the flu, and it may be hard to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. You may need a COVID-19 test to help confirm a COVID-19 diagnosis.

When to seek medical attention
for the flu

If you’re at high risk of complications from the flu, contact your healthcare provider.  A list of those at high-risk can be found here.
